Hydraulic Oil Coolers: 80–220 l/min Fan-Cooled Oil-to-Air Heat Exchangers
Fan-cooled hydraulic oil coolers in 12 V, 24 V and 220 V; capacity from 80 to 220 l/min, body sizes from 240×240×45 to 720×700×63 mm.
Part of the energy spent in a hydraulic system never comes out as work; it turns into heat. Some power is lost as heat at every throttling valve, in the oil returning through the relief valve, in the pump's internal leakage and in every friction along the line. On small systems the surface of the tank and the pipework is enough to shed that heat; as the system grows or the duty cycle tightens it is not, and the oil starts to warm.
Thinning oil brings trouble in a chain. As viscosity falls, internal leakage in pump and valves rises, the system slows and generates still more heat — a loop that feeds itself. The oil film thins, metal surfaces come closer together and wear accelerates. Seals harden at high temperature, lose elasticity and begin to leak. The oil itself oxidises; it darkens, turns acidic and leaves a varnish deposit. The practical threshold is around 60 °C: a system that runs continuously above that is asking for a cooler.
The coolers in stock are of the oil-to-air type: the oil passes through a matrix while a fan blows air across it to carry the heat away. Selection turns on three values. First, the flow to be cooled (80–220 l/min); the cooler's capacity is set by the flow passing through the line. Second, the fan voltage — 12 V and 24 V models run from the vehicle's own supply on mobile hydraulics, 220 V models from the mains in fixed installations. Third, the body size (from 240×240×45 to 720×700×63 mm); the space allotted to the cooler on the machine and the opening the fan draws air through are planned around it.
A cooler is normally connected in the return line, just before the oil enters the tank. Because the matrix is not designed to withstand full system pressure it should not be connected directly into a pressure line; it is also sensible to use a bypass check valve to protect the matrix during cold starts. Capacity drops quickly once the air-side face becomes dusty — periodic cleaning is the cheapest way to recover it.

Frequently asked questions
Does my hydraulic system need a cooler?
It does if the oil temperature stays continuously above 60 °C. Measure at the tank, after the system has run at full load for a while. A system that settles around 50 °C does not need one. Even where temperature is acceptable, a cooler noticeably extends oil and seal life on short-cycle, high-duty machines.
How is cooler capacity selected?
Capacity is chosen from the flow that will pass through the cooler; items give it in l/min (80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 220). For a return-line installation, allow for the peak instantaneous flow generated as a cylinder retracts. If capacity is too low the oil will not cool; there is no harm in oversizing beyond space and cost.
What is the difference between 12 V, 24 V and 220 V?
Only the fan motor supply differs; the cooling matrix is the same. The 12 V and 24 V models are fed from the vehicle's own electrical system on mobile hydraulics — tractors, construction machinery, truck-mounted equipment. The 220 V models connect to the mains in fixed industrial plant. Choosing the wrong voltage is the most common reason for a return.
Where is the cooler connected?
The standard position is the return line, with the oil passing through the cooler just before it enters the tank. Because the matrix housing is not designed for full system pressure it must not be connected directly into a pressure line. Fitting a parallel bypass check valve is sensible so that thick, cold oil does not strain the matrix on start-up.
There is a cooler fitted but the oil still overheats — why?
Look first at the air side of the matrix: once a mixture of dust and oil coats the surface, capacity drops quickly, and cleaning resolves most cases. There is also no cooling if the fan is not turning or is blowing the wrong way. If those are sound, there is simply too much heat being generated — usually oil returning continuously over the relief valve, or an oversized pump.
