A blanking plug is a simple but safety-critical component that seals off an unused port. An empty manifold outlet, a port left open after testing, or a spare connection point must always be closed with a pressure-rated plug — improvised fixes can blow out under pressure and create a hazard.
Thread standard and sealing method follow the same logic as fittings when selecting a plug: on tapered threads such as BSPT, the thread itself provides the seal, while parallel threads such as BSP require a gasket or O-ring. Hex socket (internal hex) types don't protrude above the surface, making them suited to tight assemblies, while hex head (external hex) types allow higher torque with a wrench, making them preferred for larger diameters.

Is there a difference between a blanking plug and a regular plug?
A blanking plug is fully closed and permanently seals the port. Vented or breather plugs, by contrast, are used on tanks and housings for pressure equalization. Mixing the two up means either the system can't breathe, or a port that should stay sealed is left open.
Should I choose hex socket or hex head?
Hex socket heads suit tight spaces and assemblies where nothing should protrude above the surface. For larger diameters and applications requiring higher tightening torque, hex head types are safer, since a wrench gives easier access.
What pressure rating does a plug withstand?
A plug's rated pressure matches the class of the fitting family it belongs to. The plug must therefore be selected to match the pressure class of the line — a lower-rated plug on a high-pressure manifold creates a safety weak point.
