Pressure Gauge Types: Glycerine-Filled, Dry, Diaphragm and Contact Gauges
Pressure gauges with Ø40, Ø63 and Ø100 mm dials, from 0-1 bar to 0-600 bar; bottom and rear connection, dry and glycerine-filled, plus mbar-range diaphragm types.
The pressure gauge is the simplest and most frequently consulted instrument in a hydraulic or pneumatic circuit. Almost every fault-finding exercise begins by reading a gauge: is the pump building pressure, is the relief valve opening early, is the line blocked — the answer shows up on the needle.
Five values govern the selection. First, dial size: Ø40 for tight panels and machine mounting, Ø63 for general use, Ø100 where a power unit has to be read from a distance. Second, the measuring range. The rule is that normal working pressure should fall at about two thirds of the scale; a circuit running at 150 bar suits a 0-250 bar gauge. A 0-600 bar gauge will also show 150 bar, but the needle sits at the start of the scale, so resolution is poor and small changes go unnoticed.
Third, connection orientation: bottom connection for piped installations and machine mounting, rear connection for gauges recessed into a panel face. Fourth, filling. A glycerine-filled gauge has a liquid-filled case; that liquid damps the needle so it does not jump with vibration, and it protects the movement from fatigue. On pump outlets, cylinder lines and mobile hydraulics — anywhere with pulsation — a filled gauge is all but mandatory. A dry gauge is adequate on vibration-free fixed lines and costs less.
Fifth, the type. A standard Bourdon-tube gauge measures in bar. At low pressure — ventilation, filter contamination, food and process lines — the millibar range is needed, and a diaphragm gauge is used instead. Vacuum gauges read the negative side. Contact gauges (NCNO) close an electrical contact when a set pressure is reached, so they can stop a pump or raise an alarm; they control as well as indicate.
A gauge is rarely piped directly into the line — it usually goes through a gauge adaptor or reverse fitting, and those parts are listed in this group as well. Where pressure surges are severe, a throttle or a protective isolating valve is fitted upstream; without one, even a robust gauge loses its needle within a few months.

Frequently asked questions
What pressure range should I choose?
Normal working pressure should fall at roughly two thirds of the scale. For a circuit running at 150 bar, 0-250 bar is the right choice. Too wide a scale costs reading resolution; too narrow a scale lets pressure surges drive the needle against the stop and damage the movement.
Why choose a glycerine-filled gauge?
The glycerine in the case damps needle flutter caused by pressure pulsation. This both makes the gauge readable and slows wear in the geared movement. Filled gauges are used on pump outlets, cylinder lines and mobile hydraulics. On vibration-free fixed lines a dry gauge is sufficient.
Bottom or rear connection?
Use bottom connection if the gauge screws straight into pipework or sits on the machine. Use rear connection if it is recessed into a panel face and read from the front. There is no difference in measurement, only in mounting orientation — and this is the single most common cause of ordering the wrong part.
When is a diaphragm gauge required?
When the pressure to be measured is in millibars rather than bar, a standard Bourdon-tube gauge cannot resolve it. Diaphragm types are used on ventilation ducts, filter contamination measurement, and low-pressure process and food lines. They also prevent the Bourdon tube from clogging with viscous or particle-laden media.
What does a contact gauge do?
A contact gauge (NCNO) closes an electrical contact when the set pressure is reached. That signal can stop a pump, sound an alarm or drive a valve. In simple systems it removes the need for a separate pressure switch, acting as indicator and threshold switch at once.
The needle no longer returns to zero — what happened?
If pressure has been released but the needle stays above zero, the Bourdon tube has been permanently stretched, meaning the gauge has been over-pressurised. It will no longer read accurately and must not be used for setting pressures. To prevent a repeat, move to a wider scale or fit a throttle in the line.
