Vacuum Cups, Ejectors and Vacuum Handling Equipment

Vacuum handling is how you lift a part without clamping it: glass, sheet metal, wood panel, cardboard box and plastic sheet — materials with a smooth surface that is hard to grip — are moved this way. The system has three parts: the source that creates the vacuum, the cup that transfers it to the part, and the filter in between.

The most common source is the ejector. Compressed air passing through it accelerates at a restriction, draws air from a side channel by the venturi effect and creates negative pressure there. It has no moving parts, needs no maintenance and reaches vacuum in under a second; in exchange it consumes air continuously. On a line that runs without pause a mechanical vacuum pump may be more economical, but for a cyclic pick-and-place job the ejector is almost always the right choice.

Cup selection comes down to two questions: what is the surface like, and how heavy is the part. A flat cup gives the highest holding force on hard, flat surfaces and lets the part swing least. A bellows cup, with its folding body, adapts to inclined, curved or varying-height surfaces; because it lifts the part slightly as it folds, it is preferred for removing parts from moulds. How many cups you need follows from part weight, cup diameter and a safety factor — typically two for horizontal lifting and four for vertical holding.

Material is chosen for the surface being carried. NBR is general purpose and works well on oily sheet; silicone is used in food and cleanroom applications but can mark some paints; polyurethane is the most abrasion resistant and lasts longest on sharp-edged sheet.

The filter is the part not to skip. The air drawn in carries dust from the part's surface with it; without a filter the ejector's venturi channel clogs and the vacuum weakens silently.
