ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) is a connection system that achieves sealing not through the thread but with an O-ring compressed between two flat faces. This detail becomes decisive in high-vibration applications: connections relying on thread sealing tend to loosen over time under vibration, whereas in ORFS the sealing element is independent of the thread.
For this reason, ORFS is the common standard in construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and mobile hydraulics. During assembly, care should be taken that the O-ring seats properly in its groove and that the faces are free of burrs; if the O-ring is pinched or pushed out of its groove, the connection will leak under initial pressure. Keeping spare O-rings on hand saves time in the field.

Why is ORFS considered more reliable than JIC?
JIC 37° seals via conical surface contact; vibration and repeated assembly fatigue this surface over time. In ORFS, sealing is achieved with an elastomer O-ring, making it more tolerant of surface variation and vibration. This is why it is preferred in mobile hydraulics.
What material should the ORFS O-ring be made of?
NBR is sufficient for standard mineral-based hydraulic oil. FKM (Viton) is chosen for high temperatures or special fluids. When replacing an O-ring, the material must be correct in addition to the size.
My ORFS connection is leaking — what should I check first?
Almost always the O-ring. It may have popped out of its groove, been pinched, cut, or gone missing. Tightening the nut further is not the solution — over-tightening cuts the O-ring. The connection should be disassembled and the O-ring visually inspected.
