Rod Ends: Threaded Clevis (PR) and Weld-On (S) Cylinder Mountings
Mounting components for hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders: PR20–PR110 threaded clevis rod ends, S series round (C) and rectangular (N) weld-on types.
A hydraulic cylinder is never bolted rigidly to its load. As the cylinder works, the axis of the load shifts, the machine frame flexes, and the line between the rod end and the rear mounting is thrown out. In a rigid connection that misalignment goes straight into the rod as a side load — and the rod is then carrying a force the seal and the bearing were never meant to take.
The consequence is well known in the field: the seal begins to leak on one side, the rod bends slightly over time, the plating scores. The replacement seal leaks again a few months later, because the seal was never the cause. A rod end is used precisely to release that misalignment — to let the cylinder swing with the load.
There are two types. The threaded clevis type (PR series) screws onto the thread at the end of the rod; the load pin passes through the jaw. The weld-on type (S series) is welded to the machine frame and comes in two sub-types: C with a round body, N with a rectangular one. The choice depends on the shape of the surface being welded to and how tight the space is.
The size figure is the diameter of the pin bore: 20 mm on a PR20, 50 mm on an S 50 N. It is selected from the pin that carries the load, not from the cylinder's rod diameter — confusing the two is a frequent mistake. On the threaded type the thread size at the rod end must match as well.
Once fitted, greasing the pin should not be neglected; a rod end run dry quickly wears oval and develops play. As the play grows, the cylinder knocks on every reversal — that noise is the signal that the rod end is due for replacement. Frequently asked questions
Is a rod end really necessary?
It is necessary in any application where there is the slightest axis misalignment between load and cylinder — which in practice means almost all of them. In a rigid connection, misalignment is carried into the rod as side load; the seal leaks on one side and the rod bends over time. Only where the load is guided and the axis is guaranteed, as in bench-type mountings, can a rigid connection be used.
Is rod end size chosen from the rod diameter?
No. The size of a rod end is the diameter of its pin bore: 20 mm on a PR20, 50 mm on an S 50 N. It is determined by the pin carrying the load. Rod diameter matters only on the threaded type, and only so that the thread at the rod end matches.
What is the difference between threaded and weld-on types?
The threaded type (PR series) screws onto the thread at the cylinder rod end and can be removed; it is preferred where the rod will be changed during maintenance. The weld-on type (S series) is welded to the machine frame and is generally used at the rear mounting of the cylinder. Most applications use both together: threaded at the rod end, weld-on at the rear.
What do C and N mean in the S series?
They denote body shape. C is a round body, N a rectangular one. The pin bore does the same job in both; the choice depends on the shape of the surface to be welded and the space available at the mounting. A rectangular body gives a wider weld area on a flat surface.
The cylinder knocks on every reversal — what causes it?
Usually play in the rod end pin. An ungreased rod end wears oval over time; when the cylinder reverses it travels freely through that clearance and strikes the pin. As the noise grows, so does the play, and the pin begins to wear as well. The remedy is to replace the rod end and grease it regularly.
