A hydraulic cylinder has three main parts: the barrel the piston travels inside, the rod that extends outward, and the seal set that keeps them tight. This page covers the raw material for the first two — the stock a workshop needs when it builds its own cylinders or refurbishes a worn one.

Chrome-plated rod is drawn steel bar with a hard chrome layer on the surface. The plating does two jobs: it reduces friction and wear, and it prevents corrosion. The wiper seal relies on the smoothness of that plating as it cleans dirt off the rod; once the plating is scored, the seal starts leaking within a short time. For this reason the rod must be protected from impact during handling and assembly. Induction-hardened rod has the steel beneath the plating hardened by induction; it stands up better to impact and side loading, which is why it is preferred in construction machinery and heavy-duty cylinders.

Honed tube forms the cylinder barrel. Its bore is ground on a honing machine to a cross-hatched finish; this texture lets the piston slide smoothly and gives the oil film a surface to hold on to. The size is always given as inner diameter × outer diameter (80 × 95, for instance): the bore determines the force the cylinder produces, the wall thickness determines the pressure it can withstand. Plain drawn tube cannot substitute for honed tube — the roughness of the bore will cut the seal on the very first stroke.

Hydraulic line tube is used for the fixed runs from pump to valve and from valve to cylinder; unlike hose it does not whip with vibration and lasts considerably longer. Its size is given as outer diameter × wall thickness (16 × 2, for instance), and the fitting is selected directly from that outer diameter: a 16 × 2 tube takes a 16L or 16S compression fitting. The tube and the fitting series (L light, S heavy) must match — otherwise the cutting ring does not grip the tube correctly.

Rod and tube items are listed together with their weight per metre (15.40 kg/m for 50 mm chrome-plated rod, for example); shipping and costing are worked out from that figure. For cut-to-length and machining see the «Hydraulic Cylinder» page, and for line connections see «Hydraulic Fittings».

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between chrome-plated rod and induction-hardened rod?

Both have a hard chrome surface; the difference is in the steel underneath. In chrome-plated rod the steel is left in its drawn condition. In induction-hardened rod the near-surface zone is heated by induction current and quenched, creating a hardened case that stops the plating from collapsing under impact and side load. Induction-hardened rod is used in construction machinery, tipper and heavy-duty cylinders; chrome-plated rod is used in ordinary industrial cylinders.

How do I read a honed tube size?

80 × 95 means an 80 mm bore and a 95 mm outside diameter; the wall thickness is half the difference, that is 7.5 mm. Cylinder force is calculated from the bore (force = pressure × piston area), while pressure rating comes from the wall thickness. Giving only the bore when ordering is not enough — the same bore exists in several wall thicknesses.

Which fitting size fits a hydraulic line tube?

Compression fittings are selected by the tube's outer diameter. A 16 × 2 line tube needs a 16L (light series) or 16S (heavy series) fitting; the choice depends on working pressure. The L series suits roughly up to 160 bar, the S series higher pressures. Wall thickness must also suit the series: a heavy-series fitting can crush a thin-walled tube as it is tightened.

What length does the rod come in?

Rod and tube are stocked as bar and cut to the length you need. The kg/m figure shown next to each item is the weight per metre and is used for both pricing and shipping. A 50 mm chrome-plated rod is 15.40 kg/m, so a 2-metre piece weighs roughly 31 kg.

Can a scored rod still be used?

Not if the score runs lengthwise (along the axis) and is deep: the seal lip will continuously leak oil through that channel, and no amount of seal replacement will restore sealing. Shallow marks that cannot be felt with a fingernail cause no trouble. Where the chrome layer is flaking, the loose fragments will cut the seal; the rod must be replaced.
