A nipple is a male-male threaded part that joins two threaded connections together. In hydraulic and pneumatic lines it is often the unsung hero: it lets two pieces of equipment made to different standards be connected to each other without disrupting the line.
A coupling nipple is the simplest type, with both ends the same size. On a reducing nipple, the ends are different sizes, and it serves to change diameter. Extension nipples move a connection to an accessible point in tight installations. When selecting a nipple, not only the thread size but also the thread standard must match — BSP and metric threads of the same diameter can be screwed together, but they will not seal.

Frequently asked questions
Does a reducing nipple weaken the line?
No, not when correctly selected. However, reducing the diameter increases flow velocity; if several reductions are used in succession along a long line, pressure loss and heating become noticeable. Where possible, the diameter change should be made at a single point.
Should I wrap the nipple with PTFE tape to prevent leaking?
On tapered threads (BSPT, NPT), a thin layer of PTFE tape or liquid sealant is appropriate. On parallel threads (BSP), sealing is provided by a gasket or O-ring; wrapping tape there is not a solution and strains the thread. The thread type must be identified first.
Can an extension nipple withstand pressure?
Yes, as long as it stays within the catalog pressure rating. The point to watch is the leverage effect created by its length: in vibrating applications, a long nipple puts extra load on the connection point and should be supported where possible.
