Pneumatic Push-In Fittings and Connection Elements
Pneumatic push-in fittings and connectors. With a thread size table (which thread is the diameter you measured), the BSPP/BSPT difference, swivel elbows and why joints leak.
Pneumatic connections are pushed, not clamped. A stainless collet inside the push-in fitting grips the tube so it cannot pull back out, and an O-ring behind it seals against the outside of the tube. To release, the collar at the front is pressed in and the tube pulled out. No tools are needed, but two dimensions have to be right.
Fitting size follows the OUTSIDE diameter of the tube. An 8 mm fitting takes both 8x5.5 and 8x6 hose because both are 8 mm outside; it will not take 6x4. The bore does not affect fitting choice, only how much air the line will pass.
The thread is the second dimension, and this is where confusion starts. The fraction in the thread name is not inches: a "1/4 thread" is not 6.35 mm, it is a thread with an outside diameter of 13.2 mm. The fraction is the historical name for the inside diameter of the pipe that carried the thread when the standard was written. Measuring the part with callipers and comparing against the table above is the quickest route.
BSP threads come in two kinds, and mixing them leaks. Parallel (BSPP, G) threads keep the same diameter along their length and seal on an O-ring or washer at the face. Tapered (BSPT, R) threads narrow along their length, seal on the thread itself and need sealant or PTFE tape. Forcing a tapered thread into a parallel port damages both.
Body style sets the function. A straight fitting connects the tube directly to the port. A 90° elbow turns the line in a tight space. Swivel types rotate on their own axis after fitting, which stops the tube being twisted — on moving equipment this noticeably extends hose life and makes it easier to respect the bend radius. Tees split the line, reducing nipples change size, blanking plugs close unused ports.
The same group carries exhaust silencers, adjustable silencers and automatic drains. An adjustable silencer fits the valve's exhaust port; because it throttles outgoing air, it is the most practical way to set cylinder speed.

The fraction in the name is NOT inches: a "1/4 thread" is not 6.35 mm, it is a thread whose outside diameter is 13.2 mm. The fraction is the historical name for the INSIDE diameter of the pipe that took the thread when the standard was written. Compare what you measure with callipers against this column. Figures are for ISO 228 (BSP parallel); on tapered BSPT the diameter varies along the thread, so measure at its start.

How do I choose push-in fitting size?
By the outside diameter of the tube. Both 8x5.5 and 8x6 hose take an 8 mm fitting because their outside diameter is the same. The bore does not affect fitting choice, only how much air the line will pass.
I measured 13 mm with callipers — which thread is that?
1/4 BSP. The table above gives actual thread diameters: 9.7 mm for 1/8, 13.2 mm for 1/4, 16.7 mm for 3/8 and 21.0 mm for 1/2. The fraction in the name is not inches; it is the historical name for the bore of the pipe that carried the thread when the standard was written.
What is the difference between BSPP and BSPT?
BSPP is parallel: constant diameter along its length, sealing on an O-ring or washer at the face. BSPT is tapered: it narrows along its length and seals on the thread itself, so it needs sealant or PTFE tape. Forcing a tapered thread into a parallel port damages both.
What is the difference between a swivel and a fixed elbow?
A swivel rotates on its own axis after fitting. Because direction can be set after the tube is connected, the tube is not twisted and the bend radius is easier to respect; on moving equipment it noticeably extends hose life. A fixed elbow is cheaper and enough where direction will not change.
The push-in fitting leaks — what should I do?
Pull the tube and look at the cut first: if it is angled or burred, the O-ring cannot seat. Recutting square without crushing and refitting solves most cases. If the outside surface is scored, cut that section off. If both are sound, the fitting's O-ring is worn and the fitting should be replaced.
Should I wrap PTFE tape on the thread?
On tapered (BSPT) threads yes, because the thread does the sealing and needs tape or sealant. On parallel (BSPP) threads no: sealing is by the O-ring or washer at the face, tape is unnecessary and too much of it strains the port.
How do I release the tube from the fitting?
Press the collar at the front in towards the body, hold it there and pull the tube. Pulling without pressing the collar damages the collet and scores the tube; a scored tube will leak when refitted.
What is an adjustable silencer for?
It fits the valve's exhaust port. Besides cutting noise, it throttles the outgoing air, which is how cylinder speed is set — the most practical speed adjustment in a pneumatic circuit.
Plastic or metal fittings?
Plastic bodies are light and will not corrode, and are sufficient on a standard air line. Metal bodies are preferred where impact and vibration are high, temperature rises, or the fitting carries mechanical load.
