A pneumatic hose is not doing the same job as a hydraulic one. Pressure is far lower — a typical line runs 6-8 bar — but the run moves constantly, threads through tight spaces and lives under vibration. That is why the body is flexible plastic rather than steel braid.
Sizes are always given as outside diameter × inside diameter. 8x5.5 means 8 mm outside, 5.5 mm inside. A push-in fitting is chosen by the OUTSIDE diameter, so swapping the two numbers means ordering the wrong part. The bore governs how much air passes: in the table above, 8x5.5 and 8x6 take the same fitting but differ by 19% in bore area. The thin-wall version flows more, the thick-wall version resists crushing and impact better.
Material comes down to three choices. Polyurethane (PU) is the common one: soft, bends to a small radius, survives being trodden on and springs back. Polyamide (PA) is stiffer, takes higher temperature and expands less under pressure, which suits fixed pipework and runs inside machines. PTFE hose is for chemical exposure or a wide temperature range.
How the hose is cut is the most frequent cause of leaks. A push-in fitting seals on an O-ring that grips the outside of the tube; if the cut is at an angle or leaves a burr, the O-ring cannot seat and the joint leaks. Always cut square to the axis without crushing the end — use a tube cutter rather than crushing it with side cutters.
Bend radius is a silent limit. Bent tighter than the hose allows, the section flattens, flow falls and the tube fatigues and cracks at that point. Where a sharp turn is unavoidable, a 90° elbow fitting preserves both flow and service life.
It is sold by the metre and cut to length. Coiled and braided air hose belong to the same group; coiled types are chosen for moving benches and hand tools because they retract out of the way.

Frequently asked questions
What does 8x5.5 hose mean, and which fitting do I need?
8 mm outside diameter, 5.5 mm inside. Push-in fittings are selected by the outside diameter, so you need an 8 mm fitting. The bore does not affect fitting choice, only how much air the line will pass.
What is the difference between polyurethane and polyamide hose?
Polyurethane is soft, bends to a small radius and tolerates being crushed, which suits moving equipment. Polyamide is stiffer, handles higher temperature and expands less under pressure, which suits fixed pipework and runs inside machines.
Should I take 8x5.5 or 8x6?
Both fit an 8 mm fitting. 8x6 has a thinner wall and 19% more bore area, so it flows more — an advantage on long runs and fast cylinders. 8x5.5 has a thicker wall and resists crushing and impact better, which suits exposed or moving routes.
The push-in joint leaks — is the hose at fault?
Usually yes, but the cut rather than the hose. If the end is cut at an angle or carries a burr, the fitting's O-ring cannot seat. Recutting square without crushing and refitting solves most cases. If the outside surface is scored, cut that section off.
Is hose sold by the metre?
Yes, by the metre and cut to the length you need. Standard coil lengths are also available.
What pressure will pneumatic hose take?
It is designed for line pressure of 6-8 bar with a safety margin. But rating falls with temperature: the same hose will not carry at 60 °C what it carries at room temperature. For hot environments choose polyamide or PTFE.
Can I bend the hose however I like?
No. Every hose has a minimum bend radius; bent tighter, the section flattens, flow drops and the tube fatigues and splits there. Where a sharp turn is needed, use a 90° elbow fitting instead of forcing the hose.
When is PTFE hose necessary?
Where there is chemical contact or a wide temperature range. PTFE is used where PU and PA will not survive solvents, oils or high heat; on a standard air line it is unnecessary cost.
How does coiled hose differ from straight?
Coiled hose retracts on itself when not in use and extends when pulled. It is chosen for moving benches and hand tools because it keeps hose off the floor. For the same bore it loses slightly more pressure than straight hose, because the run is longer.
